Trans 101 Escaping the Binary

An estimated 2.4 million elders identify as LGBTQ in the United States, with another generation aging into elderhood expecting that number to double. Unfortunately, there is no data available regarding the number of Canadians aged 65 and older who identify as members of the LGBTQ community – which only further cements the urgency of this education. The healthcare and aging services industries are ill equipped to support the unique needs of the transgender community. While conversations have advanced to make visible the invisible generation of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual elders - who have shown themselves to be the most resilient - research, best practices, and inclusive care continue to alienate our trans elders.
